Given the success of the Mehari “all purpose” car, Citroën decided to improve the off-road ability of the vehicle with a version featuring four-wheel drive. The engine remained the original one but a transmission system to the rear wheels was added with a reduction gear and a differential lock. As the car was lightweight, it worked for all terrains.
The manufacturer had hoped to win fleet contracts for the military, firefighters, agriculture or oil exploration (as was the case with the 2CV Sahara 4×4, of which the Mehari was a sort of heir), but these hopes were in vain, so production remained very limited, with just 1,213 units made.
The Méhari 4×4 from the Trigano collection is truly stunning: bought new in May 1980 on behalf of the company, it has covered only 1,705 km, or about 10.7 hours as per the timing counter that came with the car, as was the case with some utility vehicles. It is therefore in as good as in a new condition, which is very rare on such cars.
It features an array of specific instruments, including a tachometer with the redline at 6500rpm. To the right of the steering wheel, there are three levers in white, black and red, which are for the control of the 4-wheel drive system. The car is equipped with a spare tyre on the front bonnet, which was optional, and a front bumper with headlamp protection.
It has, moreover, its original manuals. The Méhari 4×4 is a rare car by itself. It is even more stunning in this state of preservation, with so few kilometers on the odometer. A really exceptional car !
